Thank you to Woodland Elementary East for welcoming me to their wonderful school in Gages Lake, Illinois. I had the pleasure of being invited as a guest reader for their school program, Leaders are Readers. This is a fantastic program to help promote literacy, and share the impact that reading has on one’s life and throughout their community. Across the country, schools and nonprofits have created their own version of “Leaders are Readers” for their communities, including mentoring programs, tutoring programs, and reading celebrations.
At Woodland Elementary East, they celebrated by inviting members of the community to read their favorite books to different classrooms. Readers this year and in the past have included authors, police officers, political leaders, businessmen and women, fire fighters, and athletes.
I had a fantastic time reading One Thousand and One Words to Fr. Fruin’s 3rd grade class, Mrs. Winston’s 1st grade class, and Mrs. Jakielski’s 2nd grade class. The students made insightful predictions, meaningful connections, and asked powerful questions. I can’t wait to come back and read to more classes for next year’s program!
