How Do You Develop a Character?

How do you develop a character? As with writing a character, my character never is the same as when he first pops into my mind. With every new idea, comes countless sketches, in every possible material imaginable: pencil, ink, watercolor, gauche, sculpture, mixed media, found objects….trying to get a look, a feel, a well-rounded character to be loved (or at least really liked)! How will he look when he’s happy? Surprised? Angry? Will his eyes go wide or shrink down small? How does his body move in action? How does he relate to the space he’s in: confident? shy? This process for me, is a playful experimental time – resulting in some good sketches and ideas… and some not. Wanted to share with you what this looks like for me…we’ll see what our character becomes!
